Test and replace Alternator on 2007 Dodge Caliper?

The complete procedure test and diagnosis the alternator and then alternator removal/install procedure.

The details to perform this task is as follows :-----


Diagnosis & Testing



  1. Inspect the battery condition.
  2. Inspect condition of battery cable terminals, battery posts, connections at engine block, starter solenoid and relay. They should be clean and tight. Repair as required.
  3. Inspect all fuses in the fuseblock for tightness in receptacles. They should be properly installed and tight. Repair or replace as required.
  4. Inspect generator mounting bolts for tightness. Replace or tighten bolts if required. Refer to the Generator Removal/Installation section of this group for torque specifications.
  5. Inspect generator drive belt condition and tension. Tighten or replace belt as required.
  6. Inspect decoupler pulley (if equipped). Ensure decoupler pulley is driving the alternator rotor.
  7. Inspect automatic belt tensioner (if equipped).
  8. Inspect generator electrical connections at generator field, battery output, and ground terminal (if equipped). Also check generator ground wire connection at engine (if equipped). They should all be clean and tight.
  9. Repair as required.

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the right front wheel.
  4. Remove the engine splash shield.
  5. Remove the accessory drive belt splash shield.
  6. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  7. Remove the idler pulley.
  8. Loosen the alternator lower mounting bolt.
  9. Remove the A/C compressor and secure out of the way.
    NOTE
    Do not disconnect the A/C lines.
  10. Unplug the ground wiring harness from the alternator.
  11. Remove the battery positive terminal nut and wire.
  12. Remove the upper and lower mounting bolts.
  13. Move the A/C line to the other side of the battery terminal stud of the alternator.
  14. Pull the alternator down and slide it out of the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Slide the alternator up and rotate into place.
  2. Move the A/C line back behind the battery terminal stud of the alternator.

    Fig. When reinstalling, ensure the battery terminal stud (1) is in front of the A/C line (2).
  3. Loosely install the lower mounting bolt.
  4. Install the upper mounting bolt and tighten both mounting bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  5. Install the battery positive cable and tighten the terminal nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6. Plug in the ground wiring harness.
  7. Install the idler pulley.
  8. Install the accessory drive belt.
  9. Install the accessory drive belt splash shield.
  10. Install the engine splash shield.
  11. Install the right front wheel.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
