How to Remove Steering Wheel on Volkswagen Touran?

2006 VW Touran Steering wheel removal

The Procedure Starts here.

Look on the rear centre part of steering wheel ,there are two small holes.
  1. One either side of steering wheel at the back, one at a time with the hole at the top of steering cowling area.
  2. You need to slide a flat bladed screw driver from behind up into hole and then lever screw driver out to outer rim of steering wheel so you move the spring loaded clip to one side which will release one side of drivers air bag.
  3.  Then rotate steering wheel 180 degrees and carry out same process again, then unplug airbag and then remove center bolt to remove the steering wheel.
  4.  Its good if you disconnect car battery while carrying out this process due to dealing with the airbag area.
These details will help.
Thanks.

Error codes P0837,P0483,P0581,P0593 on Dodge Ram

OBD error codes on 2003 Dodge Ram 5.9L Engine

Also Air Bag light comes on and goes off.

WHAT THIS ERROR CODES MEAN AND HOW TO START TROUBLESHOOTING?

I will explain each error code and its parts troubleshooting detail for you to get the problem repaired.

Error code  P0483 is for the fan clutch. It says that there is problem with fan clutch.
The clutch has an internal speed sensor and a solenoid to control it's speed.
To confirm the problem  slide under the truck and inspect the wiring running to the fan clutch. It can get caught in the fan and get cut or grounded to the radiator.

SO CAN THIS BE WIRING ISSUE OR FAN CLUTCH?

Both are to be inspected. It can be minor wiring issue.Or it can be Fan clutch itself.

I will explain you in more simple way with full description:----

The fan clutch is engine driven fan clutch, it gets operated electronically.

The fan clutch is located in the center of the fan blade on the front of the engine.

NOW,to access /view the wiring:

  • The front of  clutch facing the radiator is where the wiring comes out of it and goes down. You have to see there. It gets sandwiched into the pieces of the lower fan shroud and this is all that holds it.

Check to make sure the wiring between the front/center of the clutch and the electrical connector at the fan shroud is ok.

  • Another possibility for wiring issue is the little clearance between the radiator and the fan blade and the wiring can get sucked into the blade and cut.

Properly inspect wiring's on those two areas.

Major damage or minor damage of wiring:

MINOR DAMAGE:
If there is damage and it's minor then you can solder the wires back together and heat shrink the connections. After that for permanent repair tightly wrap the repair area with electrical tape to keep as low of a profile as possible so it stays out of the fan blade in the future. And same problem do not occur.
But if complete wiring is melted or broken/pulled from everywhere then you will have to get complete fan system re-wired.Its not a simple task.A proper professional who has complete wiring diagram can do this.

MAJOR DAMAGE:
But if the wiring to the clutch looks ok then you'll probably be needing a new clutch, not that uncommon. In most of such cases, either there is a minor wiring issue or the Fan clutch is faulty and needs to be replaced.

=======================

P0581 & P0593 these 2 codes indicates a switch issue of a problem with the clockspring.

  • P0581-SPEED CONTROL SWITCH #1 HIGH
  • P0593-SPEED CONTROL SWITCH #2 HIGH
Possible causes for OBD code P0581:---

  • SPEED CONTROL SWITCH VOLTAGE HIGH
  • (V37) S/C SWITCH #1 SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO VOLTAGE
  • (V37) S/C SWITCH #1 SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN
Commonly a issue with Speed Control Switch and Clockspring.

Possible causes for OBD code P0593:---

  • SPEED CONTROL SWITCH VOLTAGE HIGH
  • (V38) S/C SIGNAL #2 CIRCUIT SHORTED TO VOLTAGE   OR   CIRCUIT OPEN BETWEEN PCM AND CLOCKSPRING   OR   CIRCUIT OPEN BETWEEN CLOCKSPRING AND S/C SWITCH
  • (Y215) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT OPEN BETWEEN PCM AND CLOCKSPRING
  • (Y215) SWITCH RETURN CIRCUIT IS OPEN BETWEEN CLOCKSPRING AND S/C SWITCH
Commonly a issue with switch and clockspring.

Start by doing a thorough visual inspection of all the wiring in the steering column. A broken wire or connector that is not properly plugged in can set these codes.

The cruise control switch code and the airbag light are most likely related. If you haven't had any steering column wiring disconnected that could still be unplugged you most likely have a bad clockspring.

WHERE IS CLOCKSPRING MOUNTED ON DODGE RAM?

On Dodge Ram the clockspring is mounted in the steering column under the wheel. Inside it is a plastic tape with imbedded wires, this is what makes electrical contact between the steering wheel and column and allows the wheel to turn. When the clockspring fails you will lose any combination of cruise control, horn, steering wheel mounted radio controls, and the driver's airbag.

Most likely the clockspring will need to be replaced. I would recommend getting this taken care of as soon as possible. If the airbag light is on the bags won't deploy in an accident. And that is not safe. There is always a slight possibility of inadvertant deployment. So why to take chance.
Getting the issue solved ASAP is advisable.

==================================
Error code P0837 is for the Position Sensor Switch on the transfer case. Two reasons this code can set.
Either wiring problem to the sensor or the sensor itself. Both needs to be inspected.

OK.WHERE TO INSPECT WIRING'S?

Mostly probably its switch issue. The position pressure switch is faulty. The switch on top of the transfer case.

POSITION SENSOR SWITCH DETAILS:

  • The switch runs off the rooster comb on the shift linkage, that is  inside the case.
  • It's wired to the powertrain control module.
  • Its the  the silver module with three 32 way connectors mounted to the firewall behind the airbox.
POSITION SENSOR SWITCH WIRING DETAILS:

If there is going to be a wiring problem
  • Then most likely it will be under the truck where there can be road debris.
  • The wiring comes out of the transfer case and goes over the top of the trans though, so not a great chance for debris to get to it.But still getting it inspected or checking it yourself is advisable.
On most of such cases the switch is faulty, but on some cases the wiring issue is also been noticed. So you cannot rule out wiring issue complete.A loose wire, dirty wire, shorted wire etc.

===========================

CAN I DRIVE WITH THESE ERROR CODES OR ARE THIS ALL PROBLEMS RISKY TO DRIVE?

I suggest get all problems solved. Before getting on road for safe journey and normal driving get all these error code cleared.

  • The airbag light (possible clockspring) has to be repaired as it's a safety concern. A major accident can cause and No Airbag at that time will be risky.

  • The next is fan clutch. If fan clutch is faulty and not replaced then more major problems to the vehicle will be noticed. Like the truck running hot under a load and the a/c won't work well at idle. Engine problems,A/c problems, etc.

  • The transfer case switch is the least important, it's used merely to turn on the light on the dash. But these lights are very helpful.
I recommend get the issues completely repaired.

This details will help.
Thanks.

No First gear Starts In Second Gear

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee will not start in First gear, but starts and runs fine in second gear.

HOW TO START TROUBLESHOOTING THIS PROBLEM?

First of all you need to scan error codes stored in the Transmission control module(TCM).
Scan and see what fault codes are stored. To scan use  capable scan tool through the data link connector under the dash.
On your model jeep the trans is controlled by a standalone TCM .If the problem is transmission related then codes will be stored in TCM so if someone tries to check for codes using the data link connector under the hood they won't find anything.Because ECM( engine control module ) has no codes stored.

CAN IT BE FAULTY TCM OR ANY SPEED SENSOR?

Its very rare, very doubtful for TCM or any other sensor causing this problem.
As you mentioned in your problem description that  it takes off in second but all other shifts are ok then most likely the TCM is ok, and the output speed sensor will be too.

THEN WHAT CAN CAUSE THE PROBLEM?

The most likely cause of this would be a bad governor pressure transducer.

WHY GOVERNOR TRANSDUCER WILL CAUSE SUCH PROBLEM?

The governor transducer transfers data to the TCM about how much pressure is in the circuit. The TCM then controls the governor solenoid accordingly to control pressure.
Now when the transducer fail it  start reporting incorrect pressures to the TCM. If the pressure in the governor circuit has pressure in it when you come to a stop then the 1-2 shift valve won't return to the first gear position and you'll take off in second.

OK,WHERE IS THIS GOVERNOR TRANSDUCER LOCATED?

On 1995 jeep grand Cherokee the governor transducer is mounted on the right side of the valve body and its job is to tell the TCM about the exact pressure in the circuit.

ANY OTHER POSSIBILITY OTHER THEN GOVERNOR TRANSDUCER?

Another possibility can be the 1-2 shift valve in the valve body itself.May be it is actually stuck. This is possible but doesn't happen nearly as often as a failed transducer. So first confirm if transducer is working or not.

HOW CAN I CONFIRM THAT?

First get the TCM scanned. If you get no codes then monitor the governor pressure on a scan tool compared to what is shown with a manual gauge. If the two don't match and pressure is different then the transducer will need to be replaced.

One more basic test to confirm the transducer is working or not is,
come up to a stop, start to take off and drop the shifter into manual first. If this drops it to first gear then replace the transducer.

OK.WILL TRY THIS TEST'S.BUT WHERE IS TRANSDUCER LOCATED?

On 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee the transducer is mounted on the right side of the valve body .Its towards the right of the filter. To replace the transducer it will take approx an hour.

So most probably its Transducer issue. But still get it confirmed by the above mentioned testing procedure before you get it replaced.

This details will help.
Thanks.

Stalls And Dies At Stop Sign?

2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser stalls when come to stop at stop sign/red signal.
Then it will not start have to wait few minutes then starts.
No check engine light and no error codes stored.
The vehicle drives/runs fine, but only issue is noticed on stop sign or when brake is applied to slow down. The sudden stalling is noticed.

HOW TO START TROUBLESHOOTING THIS PROBLEM?

First notice what type of stalling you notice.
Is it running rough or running out of power as you slow down and then stall and then dies.
OR
It just stalls and then dies abruptly without you noticing its rough or out of power.

WHAT IS THE POSSIBILITY IF ITS RUNNING ROUGH THEN STALLS AND DIES?

If you notice its running rough and loosing power then stalling after you slow down at stop sign, then its issue with fuel pressure. The pressure is not getting maintained. When at speed the fuel is flowing right but when vehicle gets slow the pressure is low to keep the engine running and so due to lack of fuel it stalls and dies.

AND WHAT IF VEHICLE STALLS ABRUPTLY AND DIES?

If that is the cases then its due to spark related.

If it dies abruptly that tells us that you are very likely losing spark. If you were losing fuel pressure it should run rough and run out of power as it dies somewhat slowly.

SO ITS EITHER FUEL OR SPARK RELATED ISSUE.
WHAT POSSIBLE PARTS NEEDS TO BE CHECKED?

In such cases the problem is something very minor( not always). But there are multiple possibilities. You have to inspect all possible causes that can lead to such problem.
The only way to know exactly what is going on is to do some testing at the time it's acting up.Because mostly the vehicle is running fine at speed. But stalls when you slow down.So first let the problem occur.Drive you vehicle in your garage and let the stalling problem occur. Then start troubleshooting.

Most Possible causes would include
  • The problem with  powertrain control module (PCM),
  • Faulty/worn/weak camshaft position sensor,
  • Faulty/weak/worn out crankshaft position sensor,
  • The faulty coil pack itself,
  • ASD relay,
  • And wiring to any of the components.
This possibilities can cause such problems.
Any of these problems normally set a code but not always. In your case there is no error code set.So you have to inspect all this parts one by one and get them tested.

At our car repair garage for this types of problem,we mostly notice issue with the cam or crank sensor.

OK,WHERE ARE THIS SENSOR LOCATED?

On your 2001 Chrysler pt cruiser the CRANK SENSOR is located on the back of the block and reads off a tone wheel on the crank.
And the CAM SENSOR is located on the left end of the head and reads off a tone magnet on the end of the intake cam.

WHY  THESE SENSORS CAN CAUSE THIS PROBLEM?

This is because these sensors are needed for spark and the engine will die if either signal is lost.
Both these sensors send signal to vehicles computer module. If the module is not receiving correct signal from this sensors or any of the one sensor, then vehicle is stall and abruptly die.

WHY THIS SENSORS FAIL?

There are many reasons for this sensors to fail.Sensor getting old, dirt getting collected on sensors, sensor wires getting short.
On most of such cases the sensor gets short.Sometimes both or in some cases any of the one. Since these two sensors share a common 8v supply and ground, if one sensor shorts it will also take the other one out. Since the PCM has no idea the engine is turning, if both sensors stop producing a signal at the same time, no fault code can set. Cam sensors cause more problems on these but crank sensors do fail too.

OK,AND WHAT ABOUT ADS RELAY?

Its the other possibility that can cause the problem. It supplies voltage to the coils and fuel injectors.
The ASD relay is located in the power distribution center.
To confirm if this relay is working or not,try swapping the relay with another good relay.Swap the ASD relay with another one in the box and see if that takes care of it, this way you can rule out the relay.

OK,WHAT IS PCM.AND HOW IT CAN CAUSE SUCH PROBLEMS?

The PCM is the module that controls all engine functions. Its also called ECM or ECU means engine control module or engine control unit.
If the PCM is going down at the time this is happening then you will lose spark and fuel. If the PCM went down this would also explain the lack of fault codes.
To confirm the problem with PCM.
Inspect the working of  fuel pump and the temperature gauge when you notice the stalling and vehicle dies problem.. If the pump and temperature gauge work during the period it won't restart then you can rule out the PCM. Because Fuel pump running and Temperature gauge operation, both are controlled by PCM.If PCM is good, then it will control this functions.

OK,WHAT WIRING PROBLEM CAN CAUSE THIS PROBLEM?

Yes it can be wiring problem to any of the components.
Suppose if the PCM loses a power or ground feed.
Then in that case  5v or 8v circuit shorts to ground or the sensor ground circuit short to voltage. And these can cause the PCM down. If there is an open, short to power, ground or another circuit on the sensor wiring or ASD relay circuits then it could cause it too. So inspect the wiring's.

So these are the possibilities to be checked.
As you are a self repairing person and not a garage tech. You will not have many working spares to confirm the problem.
So i recommend to First try swapping the relay since it's free. If that doesn't take care of it, then follow troubleshooting with other possibilities i have mentioned above.Like  replace the cam and/or crank sensor.
Why i suggest cam and crank sensor replacing because Cam and crank sensors aren't very expensive and there is a very good chance one of them is the problem.

OR the other option is to get the repairs and inspection done at professional repair shop.

You are now basically knowing about the possibilities that can cause these problem. So if you are not getting correct advise from garage techs then you can rule them out and go to another garage professional.

This details will help.
Thanks.

How to remove Flywheel on Jet ski?

Flywheel removal on Kawasaki Jet ski 1100 STX model.

I need  to remove flywheel to replace the bindex?

There is a nut on the Flywheel assembly that has to be removed to loosen the flywheel.
To remove the Nut use Using a 9/16 inch socket.
The bolt is metric.

ENGINE IS NOT GETTING STILL TO REMOVE THE FLYWHEEL?

To get the engine still,so that you can remove the flywheel.
You can remove the spark plug from the front cylinder, look down in the hole and spin the engine over by hand, get the piston to top dead center, turn the engine until the piston drops down about 2 inches, then feed some rope into the hole. The rope will stop the piston from completing its stroke and lock the engine for you.
And you can now easily loosen the nut to remove the flywheel.

THE NUT IS VERY TIGHT TO BE REMOVED.ALSO THERE IS VERY LESS ROOM?

In most cases the nut gets easily removed. But if in your case the nut is got very tight due to getting very old and rusted. Then to apply power on the socket to loosen the nut you need more space.
So in that case, sliding the gas tank forward will allow you better access. I usually dont find much corrosion on that bolt, the compartment is sealed, or is supposed to be.But still if the rust is not letting the bolt to move ,then you can use rust remover spray on the nut.A spray like WD-40 helps in such cases. This spray will dilute the rust in few minutes and you can easily remove the nut by wrench. Make sure you have the proper size socket and use a long breaker bar.

This details will help.
Thanks.

2004 Dodge Stratus: Windage Tray Problem

Dodge Stratus Windage tray was removed to clean the internal parts, but now the problem is how to refit it exactly.
I don't know which is front side and which back.
Also what is the actual use of this wind-age tray

Its very simple.

What is Windage tray?

A wind-age tray is piece of sheet metal. It is mounted between the crank shaft and the oil pan.
It is a metallic tray that is bolted to the main caps on the bottom of the engine. This Tray is designed in such a way that it keeps the engine oil from splashing up in the engine and it stop the oil pump pick-up tube from sucking air instead of oil. The windage tray keeps the windage around the crank from the oil in the sump area. It lets the oil coming off the crank to easily enter the sump without the windage affecting the scavenging of oil already in the sump.
IN short you can say,

A windage tray  helps to improve engine lubrication by controlling the interior windage at high engine speeds.

OH,THAT'S GOOD BUT HOW?

I will explain you its details and working procedure.

When the crankshaft is rotating at high speed. You can assume high speed as highway speed. With that high speed of driving  a horizontal vortex of swirling air is generated. In this procedure the oil get pumped from crank assembly. The oil in the engine that was pumped up high and residual from the crank assembly while  draining back to the oil pan gets caught in this vortex and is spinning too.
The oil quantity can be anywhere from 1 to 3 quarts which is caught in this vortex.

And here the Windage tray comes into play.
This much swirling oil acts like a small load on the engine and robs HorsePower.
Another point is with that much oil NOT in your oil pan at High RPM you could have a potential oil starvation  problem.
On that time the wind-age tray acts like a scraper and removes the oil from the vortex letting it drain back to the oil pan.  It does not actually touch the crank shaft but it is close enough to it to skim off the oil and let it drain.
This will make you understand why windage tray is such a important part.

YES IT HELPED.NOW TELL ME HOW TO REFIT IT?

I can say its reverse of removal. Its a bolted plate.

Take a proper look at the tray and you will note that on one end it's straight across, on the opposite end the two mounting bolts go out past the end of the tray. The end that's flat and straight across goes toward the front of the engine, the end with the bolt bosses that go out past the tray is designed that way to clear the rear main bearing cap, and that end goes toward the rear of the engine.
On the Tray there are 3 big holes for ventilation. That are oil return line holes.
The oil return holes should be on the right side of the engine. That is you facing the firewall on the right side.
Just refit the plate this way.Tighten the bolts and its done.

This details will help.
Thanks.
