Fit the inner strut mount rubber into the frame.
Raise the axle beam so the damper shaft fits into the frame hole.
Install the outer strut mount rubber and washer; torque the self-locking nut to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
Install the strut maintenance lid.
Torque the shock on the rear axle beam with the weight of the vehicle placed on the ground. Torque the strut-to-rear axle beam bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).

- Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the rear wheels.
- Remove the upper shock mount cover from the rear panel, just below the speaker.
- Remove the upper mount nuts.
- Remove the lower mount bolt and remove the damper assembly (shock and spring) as a unit. Note and mark the positional relationship of the damper assembly to the car.
- Use a spring compressor to remove the spring from the shock absorber.
- Installation is the reverse of removal. The cutouts should face the front of the car. Torque the upper mount nuts to 36 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Torque the lower mounting bolt with the weight of the vehicle on the wheels to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
See Figures 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18
- Raise and safely support the rear of the vehicle.
- Remove the rear wheels.
- Place a jack under the lower arm and raise slightly.
- Remove the 8mm nuts from the top of the assembly.
- Lower the jack.
- Remove the lower shock pinch bolt.
- Remove the shock absorber from the hub assembly.
- Reverse the removal procedures. On the 1986-88 Legend, torque the upper 8mm bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) and the lower pinch bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) with the weight of the car on the suspension. On the 1989-90 Legend, torque the upper 8mm bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (39 Nm) and the lower pinch bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) with the weight of the car on the suspension.
See Figures 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27
- Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the rear wheels.
- Remove the rear speaker and the damper assembly cap.
- Place a floor jack under the lower arm and slightly compress the spring.
- Remove the upper mounting nuts and the lower mounting bolt.
- Lower the jack to remove the damper unit.
- Use a spring compressor to remove the spring from the shock absorber.
To install:
- Installation is the reverse of removal. Loosely install the mounting nuts and bolt and lower the vehicle onto the wheels to torque them. Torque the upper mounting nuts to 28 ft. lbs. (39 Nm) and the lower mounting bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) on Vigor, 76 ft. lbs. (105 Nm) on Legend.
This will help.
