How to Replace 3.6L Engine on Buick LaCrosse?

Removal & Installation



3.6L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  3. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct.
    NOTE
    Do not disconnect the battery negative cable from the vehicle.
  4. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the engine block.
    NOTE
    Do not disconnect the battery positive cable from the vehicle, underhood electrical center or the battery.
  5. Disconnect the battery positive cable from the alternator and the starter.
  6. Drain the cooling system.
  7. Disconnect the radiator hoses from the engine.
  8. Disconnect the heater hoses from the engine.
  9. Remove the bolt and the nut from the engine mount strut at the left engine mount strut bracket on the engine. Remove the bolt and the nut from the engine mount strut at the engine mount strut bracket on the upper radiator support.
  10. Remove the engine mount strut.
  11. Remove the bolt and the nut from the engine mount strut at the right engine mount strut bracket on the engine.
  12. Remove the bolt and the nut from the engine mount strut at the engine mount strut bracket on the upper radiator support.
  13. Remove the engine mount strut.
    NOTE
    Relieve the fuel pressure. Refer to Relieving Fuel System Pressure.
  14. Disconnect the fuel pressure and Evaporative Emission (EVAP) pipes from the engine.
  15. Remove the ECM chassis (outboard) side electrical connector from the ECM.
  16. Remove the wiring harness ground from the transaxle.
  17. Remove the vacuum brake booster hose from the intake manifold.
  18. Evacuate the air conditioning system.
  19. Remove the A/C compressor hose from the A/C compressor.
  20. Relocate the compressor hose to the side.
  21. Remove the transaxle electrical connector.
  22. Raise and support the vehicle.
  23. If you will be separating the engine from the transaxle, remove the torque converter bolts.
  24. Drain the engine oil.
  25. Remove the catalytic converter.
  26. Remove the front tires and wheels.
  27. Remove lower radiator air baffle.
  28. Remove the engine splash shields.
  29. Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector and secure the wiring harness to the vehicle.
  30. Remove the front wheel speed sensor wiring harnesses from the lower control arms and the frame.
  31. Remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.
  32. Remove the lower ball joints from the knuckles.
  33. Disconnect the drive axles from the transaxle.
  34. Rotate the struts and reposition the drive axles toward the rear of the vehicle in order to provide clearance for the powertrain to be removed.
    CAUTION
    Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage may cause loss of steering control which could result in an accident and possible personal injury
  35. Separate the intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear.
  36. Remove the engine mount lower nuts.
  37. Remove the transaxle mount lower nuts.
  38. Position a powertrain lift table below the powertrain.
  39. Lower the vehicle until the powertrain is supported by the powertrain lift table.
  40. Remove the fuel injector sight shield.
  41. Remove the engine mount struts.
  42. One engine mount strut and nut can be reinstalled to the engine mount strut bracket on engine to be used as an attachment point for front engine attachment.
  43. Disconnect the electrical harness clip at the UHJB and at coolant housing.
  44. Disconnect the electrical connector at the Engine Control Module (ECM).
  45. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir.
  46. Remove the power steering reservoir and bracket.
  47. Remove the attachment screw from the power steering pump reservoir to bracket.
  48. Install the power steering reservoir bracket to powertrain. Tighten the power steering reservoir bracket bolts: M6 bolt to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm) and M8 bolt to M8 Bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

  49. Install a J 28467-B and retention pin to each end of the J 28467-500 beam (2).

  51. Install the radiator shelf tube J 28467-2A (2) on top of the strut tower tube J 28467-3 (1) above the engine front (right bank) lift bracket.

  52. Install the round tube of the front support assembly J 28467-4A through the large hole in the radiator shelf tube J 28467-2A.

  53. Locate the J 28467-4A front support assembly to the upper tie bar.
  54. Install the J 28467-9 7/16 in x 2.0 in quick-release pin through the top hole in the J 28467-4A front support assembly.
  55. Install the J 28467-1A cross bracket assembly.

  56. Assemble the following to create 2 lift hook assemblies as shown:

    J 28467-34
    J 28467-6A
    J 28467-7A

  57. Install the 2 lift hook assemblies to the J 45057-2.
  58. Install the LH engine mount strut nuts and bolts to the strut brackets.
  59. Install the RH engine lift hook through the power steering reservoir bracket.
  60. Gently tighten the J 28467-34 lift hook wing nuts to support powertrain.
  61. Raise and support the vehicle.
  62. Remove the front tires and wheels.
  63. Remove and discard the two plastic braces from the front of the radiator lower air deflector. The plastic braces are directly below the front cradle bolts.
  64. Remove the positive battery cable and the retainers from the frame and position aside.
  65. Disconnect the power steering return hose from the frame.
  66. Secure the power steering return hose.
  67. Remove the control links and rotate the stabilizer shaft upward to gain access to the mounting bolts in the power steering gear.
  68. Remove the mounting bolts from the power steering gear.
  69. Secure the power steering gear.
  70. Remove the nuts that secure the engine mount to the frame.
  71. Remove the nuts which secure the transaxle mount to the frame.
  72. If applicable, disconnect the front wheel speed sensor harness connectors.
  73. If applicable, disconnect the wheel speed sensor harness from the frame and lower control arms.
  74. If applicable, remove the retainers at the front wheel speed harness from the frame and from the lower control arms.
  75. Separate both of the lower ball joints from the steering knuckle.
  76. Remove both front drivetrain reinforcements using the following procedure.
    1. Remove the drivetrain reinforcement to support brace bolts.
    2. Remove the drivetrain reinforcement to front cradle mounting stud nut.
    3. Remove the drivetrain reinforcement from the vehicle.
  77. Lower the vehicle until the frame contacts the J 39580.
  78. Remove the bolts which secure the front frame to the body.
  79. Remove the bolts which secure the rear frame to the body.
  80. Raise the vehicle in order to separate the frame from the body.
  81. Carefully raise the vehicle or lower the powertrain table in order to remove the powertrain from the vehicle.
  82. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe.
  83. Remove the coolant inlet pipe.
  84. Remove the power steering pressure pipe/hose from the pump.
  85. Remove the power steering cooler lines from the reservoir.
  86. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  87. Disconnect the electrical harness clip at the underhood junction block and at the coolant reservoir.
  88. Disconnect the Engine Control Module (ECM) wire harness from the ECM wire harness clip on the reservoir.
  89. Disconnect the power steering hoses from the power steering reservoir.
  90. Remove the power steering reservoir and bracket bolts, and remove the reservoir and bracket assembly from the vehicle.
  91. Cap off the power steering reservoir and hoses to prevent contamination.
  92. Remove the transaxle lower brace.
  93. Remove the transaxle upper brace nut located behind the power steering pump.
  94. Remove the engine to transaxle (bell housing) bolts.
  95. Use 4 M1 0x1.5x40 GM P/N 11519182, or equivalent bolts to install the engine lift brackets to the left rear and right front cylinder heads. Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  96. Use an engine hoist in order to separate the engine from the transaxle and the frame.
  97. Install the engine to a suitable engine stand.
To install:
  1. Use an engine hoist in order to remove the engine from the engine stand.
  2. Install the engine to the transaxle and the frame at the powertrain lift table.
  3. Remove the engine lift brackets.
  4. Install the engine to transaxle (bell housing) bolts. Install the torque converter bolts. Tighten the bolts to 46 ft. lbs. (63 Nm). Install the transaxle bolts and the stud. Tighten the bolts and the stud to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  5. Install the transaxle upper brace nut located behind the power steering pump.
  6. Tighten the transaxle upper brace nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  7. Install the transaxle lower brace. Install the transaxle brace bolts to the transaxle. Tighten the transaxle brace bolts to the transaxle to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  8. Install the transaxle brace bolts to the engine. Tighten the transaxle brace bolts to the engine to 46 ft. lbs. (63 Nm).
  9. Uncap the power steering reservoir and hoses .
  10. Install the power steering reservoir and bracket to the vehicle. Tighten the M6 bolt to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm). Tighten the M8 bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  11. Connect the power steering reservoir hoses to the power steering reservoir.
  12. Install the coolant recovery reservoir.
  13. Connect the ECM wire harness to the ECM wire harness clip on the reservoir.
  14. Connect the electrical harness clip at the underhood junction block and coolant reservoir.
  15. Install the accessory drive belt.
  16. Install the coolant inlet pipe.
  17. Install the exhaust crossover pipe. Torque all fasteners to 18 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  18. Carefully lower the vehicle or raise the powertrain table in order to install the powertrain to the vehicle.
  19. Position the engine support table with the frame under the vehicle.
  20. Lower the vehicle to the frame.
  21. Loosely install the bolts to secure the rear frame to the body.
  22. Loosely install the bolts to secure the front frame to the body.
  23. Align the frame to the body by inserting two 0.74 by 8 in. (19 by 203mm) pins in the alignment holes on the right side of the frame.
  24. Install the front and rear frame bolts. Tighten the front bolts to 107 ft. lbs. (145 Nm). Tighten the rear bolts to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
  25. Install the drivetrain reinforcements using the following procedure:
    1. Position the drivetrain reinforcements to the font cradle mount stud to the support brace.
    2. Loosely install the drivetrain reinforcement to support brace bolts.
  26. Install the drivetrain reinforcement to cradle mount nut. Tighten the drivetrain reinforcement brace nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Tighten the drivetrain reinforcement brace bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  27. Connect both the lower ball joints to the steering knuckle.
  28. Install the nuts that secure the engine mount to the frame. Tighten the engine mount upper nuts to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm).
  29. Install the nuts which secure the transaxle mount to the frame. Tighten the transaxle mount lower nuts to 46 ft. lbs. (63 Nm). Tighten the transaxle mount upper nuts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  30. Install the steering gear mounting bolts.
  31. Install the control links.
  32. If applicable, connect the wheel speed sensor wiring harness to the frame and lower control arm.
  33. If applicable, connect the front wheel speed sensor connectors.
  34. If applicable, install the front wheel speed harness retainers to the frame and to the lower control arm.
  35. Install the positive battery cable and retainers to the frame.
  36. Install the power steering cooler pipe.
  37. Connect the fog lamp harness connectors.
  38. Install the front tires and wheels.
  39. Lower the vehicle.
  40. Raise the vehicle and remove the powertrain lift table.
    CAUTION
    Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage may cause loss of steering control which could result in an accident and possible personal injury
  41. Install the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear.
  42. Rotate the struts and install the drive axles to the transaxle.
  43. Install the lower ball joints to the knuckles.
  44. Install the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles.
  45. Install the front wheel speed sensor wiring harnesses to the lower control arms and the frame.
  46. Connect the VSS electrical connector and secure the wiring harness to the vehicle.
  47. Install the engine splash shields.
  48. Install lower radiator air baffle.
  49. Install the front tires and wheels.
  50. Install the catalytic converter. Tighten the nuts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  51. Install the torque converter bolts as necessary.
  52. Lower the vehicle.
  53. Fill the engine oil as necessary.
  54. Install the transaxle electrical connector.
  55. Install the A/C compressor hose to the A/C compressor. Tighten the nut to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
  56. Recharge the air conditioning system.
  57. Install the brake booster vacuum hose to the intake manifold.
  58. Install the transaxle ground wire and the bolt. Tighten the transaxle ground bolt 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  59. Install the ECM chassis (outboard) side electrical connector to the ECM.
  60. Connect the fuel pressure and EVAP pipes to the engine.
  61. Install the engine mount struts. Tighten engine mount strut nuts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
  62. Connect the heater hoses to the engine.
  63. Connect the radiator hoses to the engine.
  64. Fill the cooling system.
  65. Connect the battery positive cable to the alternator and the starter.
  66. Connect the battery negative cable to the engine block.
  67. Install the throttle body air inlet duct.
  68. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery.
  69. Fill the power steering reservoir with power steering fluid.
  70. Bleed the power steering system.
  71. Inspect the system for leaks.
