How to Replace Power Rack & Pinion Steering Gear on Mercedes Benz Truck?

The details to replace Power rack and pinion steering gear is as follows.
The procedure is for Mercedes Benz Truck model vehicles.

Removal & Installation:--


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Center the steering wheel and turn the key to the lock position. Remove the key from the ignition switch.
  4. Drain the power steering reservoir.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front axle housing
    Track rod
    Pressure and return lines
    Steering coupling heat shield
    Steering coupling
    Steering gear retainer bolts
    Steering gear

To install:


Steering gear. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
Steering coupling. Torque the bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
Steering coupling heat shield
Pressure and return lines. Torque the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
Track rod. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
Front axle housing

  1. Refill the power steering reservoir with fresh fluid. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock several times. The system will bleed automatically. Check for leaks.

    Steering coupling

    Steering gear

To install:


Steering gear. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
Steering coupling. Torque the bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).

Track rod. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
Front axle housing
