How to Replace Valve Covers on Buick LaCrosse?

The Details to replace Engine Valve covers are as follows.


Valve Covers
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Procedure For both Engine models 3.6L & 3.8L are mentioned.

3.6L Engine
  1. Remove the upper intake manifold with the lower intake manifold.
  2. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connectors.
  3. Remove the wiring harness from the side of the valve cover by sliding the conduit down and outboard.
  4. Remove the wiring conduit retainers from the valve cover by rotating the wiring harness conduit retainers counterclockwise.
  5. Remove the wiring harness from the front of the valve cover.
  6. Reposition and secure the wiring harnesses away from the valve cover in order to provide clearance.
  7. Remove the ignition coils.
  8. On the left side, loosen the left engine strut bracket and strut bracket to cylinder head bolts.
  9. On both sides, remove the valve cover bolts and valve cover.
  10. Remove and discard the valve cover seal and grommets. DO NOT reuse.
To install:
  1. Install a NEW valve cover seal and NEW grommets.
  2. Place a bead 8mm (0.3150 in) in diameter by 4mm (0.1575 in) in height of RTV sealant on the engine front cover split lines 
  3. Place the left valve cover into position onto the left cylinder head.
  4. Loosely install the left valve cover bolts.
  5. Tighten the left valve cover bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) in the sequence shown.

  6. Place the right valve cover into position onto the left cylinder head.
  7. Loosely install the right valve cover bolts.
  8. Tighten the right valve cover bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) in the sequence shown.

  9. On the left side, tighten the left engine strut bracket and strut bracket to cylinder head bolts.
  10. Install the ignition coils.
  11. Position and secure the wiring harnesses to the valve cover.
  12. Install the wiring harness to the front of the valve cover.
  13. Install the wiring conduit retainers to the valve cover by rotating the wiring harness conduit retainers clockwise.
  14. Install the wiring harness to the side of the valve cover by sliding the conduit up and inboard.
  15. Connect the ignition coil electrical connectors.
  16. Install the upper intake manifold with the lower intake manifold.
3.8L Engine
Left Side
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the left engine lift bracket bolt and nut from the engine lift bracket.
  3. Remove the left engine lift bracket from the cylinder head.
  4. Remove the right engine mount strut bracket.
  5. Remove the left spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
  6. Remove the left spark plug wire cover from the left valve cover.
  7. Remove the left valve cover bolts.
  8. Remove the left valve cover and gasket.
  9. Clean the valve rocker arm mating surfaces.
  10. Clean the valve cover bolts of all thread locking adhesive.
To install:
  1. Install the new valve cover gasket. Make sure that valve cover gasket is seated properly in the valve cover groove.
  2. Install the left valve cover.
  3. Apply threadlock compound to the valve cover bolt threads.
  4. Install the left valve cover bolts and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  5. Install the left spark plug wire cover to the left valve cover.
  6. Install the left spark plug wires to the spark plugs.
  7. Install the right engine mount strut bracket.
  8. Install the left engine lift bracket to the cylinder head.
  9. Install the left engine lift bracket bolt and the nut and tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
  11. Check and fill the crankcase as necessary.
  12. Inspect for oil leaks.
Right Side
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the fuel injector sight shield.
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  4. Remove the right spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
  5. Remove the fuel injector sight shield bracket nuts.
  6. Remove the fuel injector sight shield bracket.
  7. Remove the right engine lift bracket bolt and the nut from the engine lift bracket.
  8. Remove the right engine lift bracket from the exhaust manifold.
  9. Remove the right valve cover bolts.
  10. Remove the right valve cover and gasket.
  11. Clean the valve cover gasket mating surfaces.
  12. Clean the valve cover bolts of all thread locking adhesive.
To install:
  1. Install the new valve cover gasket.
  2. Install the right valve cover.
  3. Apply threadlock compound to the valve cover bolt threads.
  4. Install the right valve cover bolts and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  5. Install the right engine lift bracket to the exhaust manifold.
  6. Install the right engine lift bracket bolt and the nut and tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  7. Install the fuel injector sight shield bracket to the exhaust manifold.
  8. Install the fuel injector sight shield bracket nuts and tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  9. Install the right spark plug wires to the right spark plugs.
  10. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  11. Install the fuel injector sight shield.
  12. Connect the negative battery cable.
  13. Check and fill the crankcase as necessary.
  14. Inspect for oil leaks.
