How to Replace a Transaxle from car?

This guide requires the following supplies:
  • Set of Sockets and Ratchet

Safety Tip:
Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or closed toe shoes.
Using an open end wrench, disconnect the battery's negative cable.

Using the proper size ratchet and socket wrench, remove the air filter box assembly.

Using the proper size ratchet and socket wrench, remove the transaxle retaining bolts on the shift cable and bracket.Using the proper size ratchet and socket wrench, remove the transaxle shift cable mounting bracket.

Disconnect all electrical connecters on AWD transaxle unit from the wiring harness.

Remove the transaxle oil dipstick and the dipstick tube.

Disconnect the transaxle throttle valve cable from the throttle valve link on the transaxle.Remove any AWD transaxle unit fluid lines.

Secure the vehicle on a level surface, making sure the vehicle will not roll or lean too much when jacked up.Use a jack to lift up the front of the vehicle. Every vehicle comes from the factory with a jack. To locate and properly use this jack see the owner's manual. The owner's manual will inform you what proper jacking locations should be used.

Using a lug nut wrench, remove the front wheels.

Using suitable needle nose pliers remove the axle nut cotter pins.Using the proper size ratchet and socket wrench remove the axle nuts.

Using a pry bar remove both CV axles.

Disconnect the wiring from the starter.Using the proper size ratchet and socket wrench unbolt and remove the starter.

Remove the rear drive shaft from the transaxle unit.

Paint a reference line from the rear end of the driveshaft to the companion flange so that they can be reassembled in the same position maintaining proper driveshaft balance.

Disconnect the rear universal joint by removing the U-Bolts or U-Clamps which hold the rear universal joint to the pinion flange. Wrap tape around the loose bearings to prevent them from falling out.

Remove the driveshaft from the transaxle by sliding it rearward.Remove the AWD transaxle unit.

Gain access to the torque converter housing bolts.Remove the torque converter housing bolts.

Support the engine with a separate jack.Support the AWD transaxle unit with a transmission jack.

Remove the AWD transaxle unit body mount.Remove the AWD transaxle unit bell housing bolts.

Slide the AWD transaxle unit off the engine to the AWD transaxle unit dowels.Lower the AWD transaxle unit out the bottom on the vehicle.

Remove the torque converter from the AWD transaxle unit, put aside for new AWD transaxle unit.Install the torque converter into new AWD transaxle unit.

Raise the AWD transaxle unit into position.Slide the AWD transaxle unit onto the mounting dowels on engine side.

Tighten the bell housing mounting bolts and torque to manufacturer's specificationsReinstall the starter.Reconnect the starter wiring.

Install the AWD transaxle unit body mount bolts and torque to spec.Install the torque converter housing to the flex plate bolts.

Reinstall CV axles.Reinstall the AWD transaxle unit fluid lines.

Reconnect all the electrical sensors to the wiring harness.Reinstall the dipstick tube and dipstick.
Reinstall the shift cable and mounting bracket.Reinstall the air filter box assembly.Reconnect the negative battery cable.Reinstall the wheels and torque lug nuts to manufacturer's specification using a torque wrench.Fill the AWD transaxle unit with the proper type and quantity of transaxle fluid and start engine.Check the transaxle fluid level and top it off before road testing vehicle.
