how To replace the timing belt and waterpump on 2003 landrover freelande

here are complete directions:

  1. remove intake manifold chamber.
  2. Remove underbelly panel.
  3. Remove right side front road wheel.
  4. Remove 3 bolts securing right side splash shield to body and remove shield.
  5. If equipped, remove 2 bolts securing right side rear timing belt cover heat shield. Remove heat shield.
  6. Remove 3 bolts securing right side rear timing belt cover. Remove cover.
  7. Rotate crankshaft in a clockwise direction and align the engine -SAFE- position, notch on crankshaft pulley aligned to the -ARROW- on front mounting plate and the timing marks aligned on the rear camshaft gears as illustrated.

  8. Remove and discard right side front exhaust camshaft cap seal from cylinder head.
  9. Position LRT-12-175 to rear camshaft gears as illustrated, remove and discard bolts securing gears to camshafts.
  10. Remove rear camshaft gears, timing belt and special tool as an assembly.
    CAUTION
    Do not turn the crankshaft or the camshafts while the timing belt is removed.

  11. If camshaft timing belt is to be refitted, mark direction of rotation on timing belt.
  12. Remove LRT-12-175 from camshaft gears and remove timing belt from gears.
    CAUTION
    Camshaft timing belts must be stored and handled with care. Always store belt on its edge and with a bend radius of more than 2 inches (20mm). Do not reuse a belt that has been twisted or bent double. Do not use a belt if debris other than belt dust is found in timing belt covers, or if belt has been contaminated with coolant or oil. Do not reuse belt if partial engine seizure has occurred. Do not reused a belt if mileage is more than 45,000 miles (72,000 km).


To install:


NOTE
After the front or rear timing belt installation is complete, it is possible that, after rotating the engine and positioning the crankshaft pulley to the -SAFE- position, the timing marks on the rear timing gears may be misaligned. This misalignment is acceptable, provided that the timing belt installation procedure is carried out correctly.


CAUTION
If the sintered metal gears have been subjected to prolonged oil contamination, they must be soaked in a solvent bath and then thoroughly washer in clean solvent before refitting. Because of the porous construction of the sintered material, oil impregnated in the gears will emerge and contaminate the belt.

  1. Clean camshaft gears and mating faces on camshafts.
  2. Place gears inverted on a flat surface, with the locating lugs on the gears positioned so they are facing each other.
  3. Keeping the timing marks aligned, position timing belt onto gears.
  4. Position LRT-12-195 between the gears, turn center nut sufficiently to spread drive belt and position LRT-12-175 to camshaft gears, remove LRT-12-195 from between camshaft gears.
  5. Fit LRT-12-198 alignment pins into the end of each camshaft.
  6. Position timing belt and gears over LRT-12-198 and locate gears onto camshafts.
  7. Position LRT-12-197 into the front end of the right side exhaust camshaft.
  8. With assistance, using a 30mm socket on LRT-12-197, turn the right side exhaust camshaft sufficiently to align camshaft gears to the drive slots in each camshaft.
  9. Remove LRT-12-198 alignment pins and fit new camshaft gear retaining bolts.
  10. Tighten camshaft gear bolts as follows:

    Step 1: 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.)
    Step 2: Additional 90 degrees

  11. Remove LRT-12-175 from camshaft gears.
  12. Remove LRT-12-197 from front end of exhaust camshaft.
  13. Clean right side exhaust camshaft cap seal recess and fit new cap seal.
  14. Fit splash shield and secure with bolts.
  15. Fit right side road wheel and tighten nuts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  16. Fit right side rear timing belt cover.
  17. Fit underbelly panel.
  18. Connect the negative battery cable.

Right Side Rear Cover
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Disconnect battery ground lead.
  3. Remove intake manifold chamber.
  4. Remove 2 bolts securing right side rear timing belt cover heat shield to cylinder head and remove heat shield.
  5. Remove 3 bolts securing right side rear cover and remove cover.

To install:

  1. Clean right side rear timing belt cover.
  2. Position right side rear cover, fit bolts and tighten to 3 ft. lbs. (4 Nm).
  3. Position heat shield, fit bolts and tighten M6 bolt to 7 ft. lbs. (9 Nm) and M8 bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4. Fit intake manifold chamber.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.

Left Side Rear Cover
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Disconnect battery ground lead.
  3. Remove engine acoustic cover.
  4. Remove 3 bolts securing camshaft timing belt left side rear cover and remove cover.

To install:

  1. Clean left side rear timing belt cover.
  2. Position left side rear cover, fit bolts and tighten to 3 ft. lbs. (4 Nm).
  3. Fit the engine acoustic cover.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.

Left Side Rear Timing Belt
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Disconnect battery ground lead.
  3. Remove underbelly panel.
  4. Remove left side rear timing belt cover.
  5. Remove right side front road wheel.
  6. Remove 3 bolts securing right side splash shield to body and remove shield.
  7. Rotate crankshaft in a clockwise direction and align the engine -SAFE- position, notch on crankshaft pulley aligned to the -ARROW- on front mounting plate and the timing marks aligned on the rear camshaft gears as illustrated.
  8. Insert timing pin LRT-12-232 through hole in lower crankcase, ensuring pin is located in hole in flywheel. Hole immediately adjacent to side of lower crankcase must be used.
  9. Remove and discard left side front exhaust camshaft cap seal from cylinder head.
  10. Position LRT-12-175 to rear camshaft gears as illustrated, remove and discard bolts securing gears to camshafts.
  11. Remove rear camshaft gears, timing belt and special tool as an assembly.
    CAUTION
    Do not turn the crankshaft or the camshafts while the timing belt is removed.

  12. If camshaft timing belt is to be refitted, mark direction of rotation on timing belt.
  13. Remove LRT-12-175 from camshaft gears and remove timing belt from gears.

  6. Position timing belt and gears over LRT-12-198 and locate gears onto camshafts.
  7. Position LRT-12-197 into the front end of the left side exhaust camshaft.
  8. With assistance, using a 30mm socket on LRT-12-197, turn the left side exhaust camshaft sufficiently to align camshaft gears to the drive slots in each camshaft.
  9. Remove LRT-12-198 alignment pins and fit new camshaft gear retaining bolts.
  10. Tighten camshaft gear bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm) then a further 90°. Remove LRT-12-175 from camshaft gears.
  11. Remove LRT-12-197 from front end of exhaust camshaft.
  12. Clean left side exhaust camshaft cap seal recess and fit new cap seal.
  13. Fit splash shield and secure with bolts.
  14. Fit right side road wheel and tighten nuts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  15. Fit left side rear timing belt cover.
  16. Fit underbelly panel.
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.

Front Crankshaft Seal
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Disconnect battery ground lead.
  3. Remove camshaft timing belt.
  4. Remove crankshaft gear.
  5. Fit thrust button, LRT-12-200/3 to end of crankshaft.
  6. Screw LRT-12-200 into crankshaft front oil seal.
  7. Tighten center bolt of LRT-12-200 to remove oil seal.
  8. Remove and discard oil seal from special tool.
  9. Remove thrust button from crankshaft.

To install:

  1. Using a lint free cloth, thoroughly clean oil seal recess in oil pump and running surface on crankshaft.
  2. Fit oil seal guide, from seal kit, over end of crankshaft.
  3. Position new seal on crankshaft up against oil pump housing. Drift seal into place using tool LRT-12-202.
  4. Remove LRT-12-202 and oil seal guide from crankshaft.
  5. Fit gear to crankshaft.
  6. Fit camshaft timing belt.
  7. Connect battery ground lead.

Left Side Front Cover
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Disconnect battery ground lead.
  3. Remove auxiliary drive belt.
  4. Remove 3 Torx® screws securing power-assist steering (PAS) pump pulley, and remove pulley.
  5. Remove Torx® screw securing idler pulley to front mounting plate and remove pulley.
  6. Remove bolt securing dipstick tube to cylinder block.
  7. Remove 3 bolts securing camshaft timing belt left side front cover and remove cover.

To install:

  1. Clean left side front timing belt cover.
  2. Position left side front timing belt cover, fit and tighten bolts to 3 ft. lbs. (4 Nm).
  3. Position dipstick tube bracket to cylinder block and tighten bolt to 7 ft. lbs. (9 Nm).
  4. Clean idler pulley, position pulley to engine front mounting plate and tighten Torx® bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  5. Position PAS pump pulley, fit and tighten Torx® screws to 7 ft. lbs. (9 Nm).
  6. Fit auxiliary drive belt.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.

Front Timing Belt
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Disconnect battery ground lead.
  3. Remove auxiliary drive belt.
  4. Remove right side front road wheel.
  5. Remove 3 bolts securing right side splash shield to body and remove shield.
  6. Remove 3 bolts securing camshaft timing belt left side rear cover and remove cover.
  7. Remove intake manifold chamber.
  8. Remove 2 bolts from right side rear timing belt cover heat shield and remove shield.
  9. Remove 3 bolts from right side rear timing belt cover and remove the cover.
  10. Using a socket, rotate crankshaft pulley bolt in a clockwise direction and align the engine -SAFE- position, notch on crankshaft pulley aligned to the -ARROW- on front mounting plate and the timing marks aligned on the rear camshaft gears as illustrated.
  11. Insert a timing pin, LRT-12-232, through hole in lower crankcase (hole immediately adjacent to side of lower crankcase). Ensure pin is located in hole in drive plate.
  12. Remove bolt securing PAS pipe to engine front mounting plate.
  13. Remove 3 Torx® screws securing PAS pump pulley and remove pulley.
  14. Remove 3 bolts securing PAS pump to front mounting plate and tie pump aside.
  15. Release alternator battery lead terminal cover, loosen terminal nut and disconnect lead from terminal.
  16. Detach the connector from alternator.
  17. Remove lower bolt and upper nut and bolt securing alternator to front mounting plate.
  18. Remove alternator.
  19. Remove Torx® screw securing idler pulley to front mounting plate and remove pulley.
  20. Loosen bolt securing lower engine steady to front sub-frame.
  21. Remove bolt securing lower engine steady to sub-frame.
  22. Remove bolt securing engine steady to oil pan mounting, release lower engine steady from oil pan mounting.
  23. Remove 3 bolts securing camshaft timing belt right side front cover and remove cover.
  24. Remove 3 bolts securing camshaft timing belt left side front cover and remove cover.
  25. Assemble LRT-12-161 to LRT-12-199 and secure with clamp bolt.
  26. Insert LRT-12-161 with LRT-12-199 into crankshaft pulley, loosen and remove pulley bolt. Ensure crankshaft does not rotate during this operation.
  27. Remove special tool from crankshaft pulley and remove crankshaft pulley.
  28. Remove 3 bolts securing camshaft timing belt lower cover to cylinder block and remove cover.
  29. Remove 2 bolts securing auxiliary drive belt tensioner and remove tensioner.
  30. Note installed position of heat shield on A/C compressor and remove 3 bolts securing A/C compressor to front mounting plate and cylinder block. Release A/C compressor and heat shield and position aside.
  31. Drain engine oil.
  32. Remove bolt securing dipstick tube to cylinder block.
  33. Depress locking collar, release and remove dipstick tube from engine oil pan.
  34. Remove rubber blanking plug from around camshaft timing belt tensioner.
  35. Remove 3 bolts securing engine front mounting plate and lifting bracket to cylinder block.
  36. Remove bolt securing lifting bracket to right side cylinder head and remove lifting bracket.
  37. Remove 2 bolts securing IRD support bracket to engine front mounting plate.
  38. Remove 5 bolts and 2 pillar bolts securing engine front mounting plate to cylinder block.
  39. With care, release and remove front mounting plate from engine.
  40. Insert a suitable 1.5mm diameter pin through the hole in the tensioner body and into the hole in the plunger. If holes in body and plunger are not aligned, move tensioner backplate, using a suitable bread-bladed screwdriver; this will move plunger enough to enable pin to be inserted.
  41. Remove and discard 2 bolts securing tensioner to cylinder block, and remove tensioner. DO NOT apply excessive force during removal; if bolts are stuck, apply anti-seize lubricant.
    CAUTION
    DO NOT loosen Allen screw securing tensioner pulley.

  42. If camshaft timing belt is to be refitted, mark direction of rotation on timing belt before removal.
  43. With care, ease camshaft timing belt from gears using fingers only and remove timing belt.
    CAUTION
    Camshaft timing belt must be replaced if cylinder head is to be removed or new drive gears, tensioner or coolant pump are to be installed. Camshaft timing belts must be stored and handled with care. Always store a camshaft timing belt on its edge with a bend radius greater than 2.0 inches (50mm). Do not use a camshaft timing belt that has been twisted or bent double as this will damage the reinforcing fibers. Do not use a camshaft timing belt if debris other than belt dust is found in timing belt covers. Do not use a camshaft timing belt if partial engine seizure has occurred. Do not use a camshaft timing belt if mileage exceeds 48,000 miles (77, 000 km). Do not use an oil or coolant contaminated timing belt, cause of contamination must be rectified.

  44. Remove left side and right side exhaust camshaft cap seals.
  45. Position tools LRT-12-196 to left side and right side front inlet camshaft gears and into the end of each exhaust camshaft.
    CAUTION
    Special tools must be installed when tightening or loosening gear retaining bolts; otherwise, damage to camshafts may occur.

  46. Remove and discard bolts retaining front inlet camshaft gears to camshafts.
  47. Remove tools LRT-12-196 from both inlet camshaft gears and exhaust camshafts.
  48. Remove camshaft drive gears and hub assemblies.

To install:


NOTE
After the front or rear timing belt installation is complete, it is possible that, after rotating the engine and positioning the crankshaft pulley to the -SAFE- position, the timing marks on the rear timing gears may be misaligned. This misalignment is acceptable, provided that the timing belt installation procedure is carried out correctly.

  1. Clean camshaft gears and hubs, crankshaft gear, tensioner and water pump pulleys.
    CAUTION
    If the sintered metal gears have been subjected to prolonged oil contamination, they must be soaked in a solvent bath and then thoroughly washer in clean solvent before refitting. Because of the porous construction of the sintered material, oil impregnated in the gears will emerge and contaminate the belt.

  2. Install hubs to camshaft gears and install gears to camshafts. Install new bolts and tighten sufficiently to allow gears to rotate without tipping.
  3. Position timing belt to gears.
    NOTE
    To prevent timing belt from disengaging from crankshaft gear when installing, place a suitable wedge between the belt and oil pump belt guard.

  4. Install tools LRT-12-196 to both front inlet camshaft gears and into the end of each exhaust camshaft.
  5. With assistance, rotate each exhaust camshaft slightly and align timing marks on left and right rear camshaft gears.
  6. Remove tool LRT-12-197 from exhaust camshaft.
  7. Install tools LRT-12-175 to left and right rear camshaft gears.
  8. Rotate both front intake camshaft gears fully clockwise, as viewed from front of engine.
  9. Using fingers only, install timing belt to gears. Start at the crankshaft gear and work in an counterclockwise direction, keeping the belt run as taut as possible and turning the camshaft gears only a minimum amount counterclockwise to install timing belt.
    CAUTION
    Gears must not be rotated counterclockwise more than 1 tooth.

  10. Position an Allen key in the tensioner backplate and hold tensioner pulley against timing belt.
  11. With assistance, position tensioner, install new bolts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  12. Remove tools LRT-12-175 from rear timing belt gears.
  13. Install tools LRT-12-196 to both front intake camshaft gears, and into the end of each exhaust camshaft.
    CAUTION
    Special tools must be installed when tighten or loosening gear retaining bolts; otherwise, damage to camshafts may occur.

  14. Tighten front intake camshaft gear bolts to the following:

    Step 1: 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm)
    Step 2: Tighten bolts 90°further

  15. Remove tools LRT-12-196 from both intake camshaft gears and exhaust camshafts.
  16. Remove wedge from between drive belt and oil pump belt guard.
  17. Remove 1.5mm diameter pin from tensioner.
  18. Remove timing pin LRT-12-232.
  19. Clean exhaust camshaft front cap seal locations and install new cap seals.
    CAUTION
    The sealing edge of the cap seal and mating face must be clean and dry.

  20. Position engine front mounting plate and maneuver plate into position. Install bolts, but do not tighten at this time.
  21. Install bolts securing IRD support bracket to front mounting plate. Do not tighten bolts at this time.
  22. Install and tighten bolts in the sequence shown, to the following specifications:

    Bolt No. 1: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
    Bolt No 5: 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
    Bolts Nos. 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7: 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm)

  23. Position engine lifting bracket, install bolts securing lifting bracket and front mounting plate to cylinder block and right side cylinder head. Tighten bolts as follows:

    M10 bolts: 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
    M8 bolt: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)

  24. Clean end of dipstick tube.
  25. Position dipstick tube to oil pan and cylinder block, install bolt and tighten to 7 ft. lbs. (9 Nm).
  26. Position A/C compressor to front mounting plate and cylinder block, align heat shield, install and tighten bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  27. Clean lower timing belt cover.
  28. Position lower timing belt cover, install and tighten bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (9 Nm).
  29. Clean crankshaft pulley.
  30. Install crankshaft pulley to crankshaft gear and ensure that the indent on pulley locates over the lug on crankshaft gear.
  31. Install crankshaft pulley bolt and washer, position LRT-12-161 with LRT-12-199 into crankshaft pulley. Tighten pulley bolt to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
  32. Remove LRT-12-161 and LRT-12-199 from crankshaft pulley.
  33. Clean auxiliary drive belt tensioner.
  34. Position auxiliary belt tensioner, install bolts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  35. Clean left side and right side front timing belt covers.
  36. Position left side and right side front timing belt covers, install and tighten bolts to 3 ft. lbs. (4 Nm).
  37. Clean idler pulley, position pulley to engine front mounting plate and tighten Allen bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  38. Position alternator to front mounting plate.
  39. Install bolt and nut and bolt securing alternator to front mounting plate and tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  40. Connect alternator connector.
  41. Connect battery lead to alternator, install and tighten nut to 6 ft. lbs. (8 Nm), install terminal cover.
  42. Position PAS pump to front mounting plate, install and tighten bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  43. Position PAS pipe to engine front mounting plate, install and tighten bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  44. Clean PAS pump pulley mating faces.
  45. Position PAS pump pulley, install and tighten Torx® screws to 7 ft. lbs. (9 Nm).
  46. Position lower engine steady to oil pan mounting, install and tighten bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  47. Tighten bolt securing lower engine steady to sub-frame to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  48. Clean left side rear timing belt cover.
  49. Position left side rear timing belt cover, install and tighten bolts to 3 ft. lbs. (4 Nm).
  50. Install heat shield. Install and tighten bolts as follows:

    M6 bolt: 7 ft. lbs. (9 Nm)
    M8 bolt: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)

  51. Install intake manifold chamber.
  52. Install right side road wheel and tighten nuts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  53. Install auxiliary drive belt.
  54. Fill engine with oil.

Right Side Front Cover
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Disconnect battery ground lead.
  3. Remove auxiliary drive belt.
  4. Remove 3 bolts securing camshaft timing belt right side front cover and remove cover.

To install:

  1. Clean right side front timing belt cover.
  2. Position right side front timing belt cover, fit and tighten bolts to 4 Nm (36 inch lbs.).
  3. Fit auxiliary drive belt.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.
WATER PUMP:
  1. Disconnect battery ground lead.
  2. Drain cooling system.
  3. Remove camshaft timing belt.
  4. Remove and discard 7 bolts securing coolant pump to cylinder block.
  5. Release coolant pump from cylinder block and remove.
  6. Remove and discard O-ring from coolant pump.

To install:

  1. Clean coolant pump and mating face of cylinder block.

  2. Lubricate new O-ring with rubber grease and fit to coolant pump.
  3. Fit coolant pump to cylinder block. Fit new bolts and tighten progressively in the sequence illustrated to 7 ft. lbs. (9 Nm).
  4. Fit camshaft timing belt.
  5. Fill cooling system.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.
