How to remove engine on GMC S15 truck.

Engine

AUTION
Please refer toChapter 1before discharging the compressor or disconnecting air conditioning lines. Damage to the air conditioning system or personal injury could result. Consult your local laws concerning refrigerant discharge and recycling. In many areas it may be illegal for anyone but a certified technician to service the A/C system. Always use an approved recovery station when discharging the air conditioning.

The following procedures require the use of an engine hoist with sufficient capacity to safely lift and support 500-1000 lbs.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Except 4.3L Engines
  1. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable.

Refer toChapter 5 for special proceduresto release fuel system pressure.

  1. Matchmark the hood hinges for installation reference and remove the hood.
  2. Drain the cooling system and remove the upper and lower radiator hoses. Disconnect the coolant overflow hose. Disconnect the heater hoses at the engine.
  3. Remove the upper and lower fan shrouds. On automatic transmission equipped vehicles, disconnect and plug the transmission cooler lines.
  4. Remove the air cleaner assembly and cover the carburetor/throttle body with a rag.
  5. Label and disconnect all necessary hoses, vacuum lines and wires from the engine, transmission and transfer case (if equipped).
  6. Disconnect the throttle cable, transmission TV cable and cruise control cable (if equipped).
  7. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Disconnect the exhaust pipes at the manifold.
  8. Remove the front driveshaft and skid plates on 4WD vehicles.
  9. If applicable, disconnect the strut rods at the bell housing.
  10. For automatic transmission vehicles the body will have to be raised away from the engine in order for the top transmission-to-engine bolt(s) to clear the cowl. Remove the body mounting bolts, then use a floor jack to raise the front of the body away from the frame. Support the body using blocks of wood. Remove the top transmission-to-engine mounting bolts, then remove the wood and lower the body back into position.

4WD vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions usually do not require transmission/transfer case removal when removing the engine. If equipped with a 2.8L engine, 4WD and a manual transmission, the transfer case and transmission must usually be removed prior to removing the engine. Please refer to the appropriate procedures located inChapter 7of this manual.

  1. Remove the rear driveshaft.
  2. Support the transmission with a floor jack and remove the transmission crossmember.
  3. For vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions:

    Remove the torque converter cover
Remove the torque converter-to-flexplate attaching bolts
If transmission removal is desired, remove the transmission shift linkage and, if equipped, the transfer case shift linkage. Remove the remaining transmission-to-engine mounting bolts, and remove the transmission and transfer case (if equipped) as an assembly

  4. For vehicles equipped with manual transmissions:

Remove the clutch slave cylinder and set aside
If transmission removal is desired or necessary, remove the transmission shift linkage and shifter, and if equipped, remove the 4WD transfer case shift linkage and shifter.
Remove the transmission-to-bellhousing bolts, if the transmission is being removed, carefully lower the transmission and transfer case (if equipped) as an assembly.

If the manual transmission is removed, leave the bellhousing in place to protect the clutch during engine removal. Leaving the bell housing in place will also prevent the necessity of jacking the body off the frame to access the top bell housing-to-engine bolts which would otherwise be blocked by the cowl.

  1. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  2. Remove the fan.
  3. If equipped, remove the power steering pump, A/C compressor and air pump with their brackets and place aside in the engine compartment with the lines intact.

DO NOT disconnect the fluid or refrigerant lines.

  1. Verify that nothing else is attached to the engine and, if necessary, disconnect the remaining component(s).
  2. Attach a suitable lifting device to the engine and remove. Pause several times while lifting the engine to make sure no hoses or wiring have been snagged by the powerplant.

To install:
  1. Using the lifting device, carefully lower the engine into position. Loosely install the engine mount bolts at this time to hold the engine in position.
  2. If equipped, reposition and secure the power steering pump and/or A/C compressor to the engine.
  3. Install the engine cooling fan and the accessory drive belts.
  4. If removed, install the transmission and, if equipped, transfer case.
  5. Install the transmission crossmember and remove the support. Install all accessible transmission-to-engine/bell housing bolts (as applicable) at this time.
  6. Tighten the engine and transmission fasteners:

    Engine mount-to-engine: 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
Engine mount-to-frame mount: 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
    Transmission mount-to-transmission: 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
    Transmission mount-to-crossmember: 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).

  7. For automatic transmission vehicles, install the torque converter-to-flexplate bolts and install the torque converter cover.
  8. If the transmission/transfer case was removed, reconnect the shift linkage.
  9. For manual transmission vehicles, position and install the slave cylinder assembly.
  10. Install the rear driveshaft.
  11. Using a floor jack, carefully jack the front of the body away from the frame, then install the remaining transmission-to-engine bolts. Carefully lower the body back into position and secure the body mounts.
  12. If applicable, connect the strut rods at the bell housing.
  13. For 4WD vehicles, install the front driveshaft and, if equipped, the skid plates.
  14. Connect the throttle cable, transmission TV cable and cruise control cable (if equipped).
  15. Reconnect all necessary hoses, vacuum lines and wires from the engine, transmission and transfer case (if equipped), as noted during removal.
  16. Remove the cover from the throttle body/carburetor, then install the air cleaner assembly.
  17. For automatic transmission equipped vehicles, remove the plugs, then reconnect the transmission cooler lines.
