Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins Steering And Tire Issues

Noisy Steering Column And Tire Noise On Dodge Cummins

2005 Dodge Cummins, 6" lift with soft coil springs, 37' tires. Having steering and ride issues for a long time. Hear a pop noise from steering when I turn sometimes and key ignition is some times tight to turn.
A year ago vehicle met an accident someone hit front tire with a car hard enough to break some plastic on there car.

Already replaced  the whole front end including a new mopar steering box, bushings, ball joints, newest cross over steering, adjustable track bar and steering brace.

HOW To REPAIR:

Can Be steering Column problem:

First basic inspection is required about what area does the pop noise come from? If the noise is coming from the column area then you may need a steering column.

Problem indicates Towards Faulty Intermediate Shaft:

More likely it seems like worn intermediate shaft. The intermediate shaft goes between the lower end of the column and the steering gear and has a slip joint in the middle. The shaft wears at the slip and will become loose, and there is also a U joint in the shaft. A failed U joint or loose slip joint will both cause steering issues and noises.

Also Testing Other possibilities:

Issue with ignition system assembly parts

If you were hit in a tire rather than a front end impact it's not that likely the column would be collapsed, but it's possible. If the key is hard to turn it could be the ignition switch, lock cylinder or the link in between, not necessarily a steering column issue.

Steering assembly possibility:

If  the popping noise is felt in the steering gear when turning the wheel then you know the problem is going to be in the steering linkage, gear, intermediate shaft or possibly the column. If the linkage has been replaced then it shouldn't be an issue.

Troubleshooting Ideas:

Inspecting Intermediate Shaft:

From under the hood reach down and grab the intermediate shaft in the center and pull it up and down toward you and see if there is any movement. If there is movement then you know it's loose, you may also hear some noise. If it's the same noise as when turning the wheel then you know that's where the problem is.

Inspecting Pitman Shaft:

This is to confirm problem with steering gear.

For this you will need someone to help you.
Take a look at the pitman shaft on the bottom of the steering gear, which is what the pitman arm connects to. Have a helper turn the wheel left and right with the engine off and see if there is side to side movement in the shaft. If there is side to side movement then there is an internal issue in the steering gear.

Another procedure to confirm issue with steering gear.
You could also remove the drag link end from the pitman arm and see if you can move it by hand and feel play, which would also prove an internal steering gear issue.

These troubleshooting tips will help you to confirm the problem.
Thanks.
