Fig. Remove the coil spring assembly
  1. Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle, as outlined earlier in this Section.
  2. Mount the strut assembly into a suitable spring compressor.
  3. Compress the strut approximately 1 / 2 its height after initial contact with the top cap.

WARNING
Never bottom the spring or dampener rod!

  1. Remove the center nut from the strut and remove the upper mounting bracket and bushings.
  2. Remove the coil spring.
To install:
  1. Install the compressed spring on the strut assembly.
  2. Install the upper bushings and the mounting bracket. Install the nut and tighten it to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
  3. Remove the strut from the spring compressor.
  4. Install the strut into the vehicle.
  1. Remove the strut from the vehicle.
  2. Position the strut assembly using fixture tools MB991793, MB991794, MB991795 and MB9910830 or equivalent.
    NOTE
Position the strut assembly in the disassembly fixture using the bolt and nut that were removed from the vehicle. When installing the bolt and nut, lightly tighten them by hand.
  3. Compress the coil spring approximately 0.20 inch, using the spring compressor.
    NOTE
Do not use an impact wrench to tighten the strut nut, otherwise the strut nut will be damaged. Vibration of the impact wrench will cause the valve inside the strut to drop out.
  4. If equipped with the 2.4L engine, use special tool MB991682 to secure the strut, and then remove the strut self locking nut using tool MB991681.
  5. If equipped with the 3.8L engine, use a hexagon wrench and a pipe to secure the strut, and then remove the strut self locking nut using tool MB991681.
  6. Remove the strut insulator, strut bearing, spring upper seat, spring upper pad, damper, coil spring, and spring lower pad.
  7. To assemble, engage the three lugs of the spring lower pad into the holes on the strut.
  8. If the upper plate and lower plate of the strut have been disassembled, reassemble them.
  9. Position the assembly in the holding fixture. Be sure that the bearing is seated correctly.
    NOTE
When the strut piston rod is positioned to the hole of the strut insulator with compressing the coil spring, be careful that your hand is not jammed by the coil spring.
  10. Compress the coil spring slowly using tools MB991793, MB991794, MB991795 and MB9910830 or equivalent.
  11. While the coil spring is being compressed, by the special tools, temporarily tighten the strut nut (self locking nut).
    NOTE
Do not use an impact wrench to tighten the strut nut, otherwise the strut nut will be damaged. Vibration of the impact wrench will cause the valve inside the strut to drop out.
  12. If equipped with the 2.4L engine, use special tools MB991681 and MB991682 to tighten the strut nut (self locking nut) to 60-70 ft. lbs. (44-52 Nm).
  13. If equipped with the 3.8L engine, use special tool MB991681, a hexagon wrench and a pipe to tighten the strut (self locking nut) to 60-70 ft. lbs. (44-52 Nm).
  14. Install the strut in the vehicle.
  1. Remove the strut from the vehicle.
  2. Position the strut assembly using fixture tools MB991238 and MB9911237 or equivalent.
    NOTE
Do not tighten the special tool bolt too tight or the tool will break. Install the tools evenly and so that the maximum length will be attained within the installation range. Do not use an impact wrench to tighten the bolt of special tool MB991237, otherwise the tool will be damaged.
  3. Using the special tools, compress the spring.
    NOTE
To prevent the piston rod jam nut inside the strut from loosening, do not use an impact wrench when the jam nut is loosened.
  4. Use special tools MB991681 and MB991682 to secure the strut, and then remove the jam nut.
  5. Remove the strut insulator assembly, bearing, upper bearing seat, bump rubber or dust cover (depending on the vehicle), coil spring and lower strut pad.
  6. If the upper spring seat peeled off the pad adhere the seat and the pad with double sided tape.
  7. Position the strut assembly in the holding fixture. Ensure that the bearing is seated correctly.
    NOTE
Do not use an impact wrench to tighten the bolt of the special tool or the tool will break.
  8. While the coil spring is being compressed by the special tools, temporarily tighten the jam nut.
  9. Align the hole in the strut assembly lower spring seat with the hole in the upper spring seat. You can use a rod to facilitate the alignment process.
  10. Align both ends of the coil spring with the grooves in the spring seat, and then loosen the special tools.
    NOTE
Do not use an impact wrench to tighten the jam nut, otherwise the jam nut will not be tightened securely.
  11. Use special tools MB991681 and MB991682 and tighten the jam nut to 38-52 ft. lbs. (50-70 Nm).
  12. Install the strut in the vehicle.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support vehicle.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Appropriate wheel assembly
Sway bar link from the damper fork
Damper fork lower through-bolt and upper pinch bolt
    Damper fork assembly
Shock absorber upper nuts and remove the strut assembly from the vehicle
  4. Compress the coil spring with a special compression tool.

    Self-locking nut and washer
Upper bushing, upper bracket assembly, the upper spring pad, and the collar
Other upper bushing, cup assembly, bump rubber, dust cover, and the coil spring. Carefully remove the coil spring compression tool
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

Compressed coil spring to the shock absorber assembly. Be sure to align the edge of coil spring to the stepped part of the spring seat. Install the dust cover, bump rubber, cup assembly, upper bushing, collar, and upper spring pad.
Upper bracket assembly and position it so that the 3 bolts are in the correct position
Upper bushing, washer, and locknut. Torque the locknut to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
Shock absorber and tighten the upper mounting nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
  2. Align the shock to the damper fork and install the damper fork. Tighten the lower through-bolt/nut to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm) and the upper pinch bolt to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  3. Connect the sway bar link to the damper fork and tighten the link nut to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  4. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  5. Perform a front end alignment.

This will help.
Thanks.
