how to replace inside door handle cable on Ford F150

Door cable removal for a 1992 Ford Ranger

1. Remove the door panel.
a. Lower the window.
b. Remove the window crank handle. The handle has a modeled plastic cover. Take a screw driver and pry the plastic cover of the handle. Be careful, the cover is still attached to the handle at the knob end. Remove the torx screw where the handle attaches to the window regulator.
c. Remove 3 screws holding the panel on. One screw is on the elbow rest/inside door handle. The other two are located under the door panel tray (where you put your windshield scraper.
d. Remove the inside door handle trim. There is a phillips screw under the door handle.
e. With a long, flat tool (a long flat screwdriver or pry bar) pry the panel off the door. Start at the front bottom and work your way around. Lift the door panel up and out to remove.

2. Remove the inside door handle. Remove the 2 phillips screws holding the handle. Slide the handle back slightly. There is a notch in the sheet metal to allow removal of the handle. Find the notch, lift up and out until the door handle clears the door.

3. Disconnect the cable from the door handle. Remove the screw mounting the cable to the door handle. Hold the door handle open and rotate the cable around to release the cable end from the handle. Disconnect the plastic retaining clip mounted to the interior of the door. Pull the cable to the bottom of the door.

4. Remove the door latch. Roll the window up. Take 3 screws holding the door latch. Warning: once you remove these screws, there's no going back.
a. Drop the latch down a little. You can see through the access hole 2 rods. The rod for the interior lock has a threaded end. The rod is attached to the latch using a yellow plastic clip. The plastic clip has a retaining arm keeping the rod from sliding off. You can rotate the entire door latch to get a better look at it.
b. With your hand pry the plastic piece keeping the rod attached to the latch. You have to pry the latch and work the rod off the plastic retaining fixture.
c. Remove the second rod which attaches to the outside door handle. This removes the same way the first rod did.
d. There is a 3rd rod which attaches to the exterior door lock. To remove this, put your key in the exterior lock and rotate the lock clockwise. This will allow you to see enough of the lock to remove it like the first 2 rods.
e. Once you have all rods disconnected from the latch you can extract the latch from the door by rotating the latch around the window channel guide, or dropping the latch down past the window channel guide.

5. With the door latch out of the door, pry the cable out from the latch body with plyers.

To re-install reverse the process, just like car manuals say.

- Helpful hints reassembling.
1. Connect rods in this order: Outside door lock, Outside door handle, inside door lock.
2. Leave the door latch loose while you are attaching the outside door lock rod. This will allow you some visual clues aligning the rod with the door lock. Also, put your key in the lock and rotate the lock clockwise to see the plastic rod clip.

have to remove the door panel ,,, to check to see if the inside door handel is broken

to do this we start from the top of the door and work our way to the bottom ,, start by removing the glass latch two screws from the door

graphic

then the upper door panel around the glass will pull off, you may want to use a big flat screw driver to get behind the panel and help pry it off

graphic

after the upper panel is off, then you can access the screws on the lower door panel and remove them

graphic

then lift UP on the door panel and it will slide off

now you can remove the two nuts that hold the inside door handle in place and there should be two cables that mount to the handle,, see if the handle is broken or the cable is broken

inside the door there is a unit called the remote control assembly, this is ware all the cables and rods secure to ,,,,, the inside door handle has a cable that runs to this ,, make sure that when you move the inside door handle that you see the remote control move ,,,, then there is a cable that runs to the lower latch and the upper latch ,, they secure to the remote control ,, make sure they move when you move the inside door handle ,,,,,,and then there is a rod or cable from the saftey latch on the leading edge of the door ,,, move the saftey latch in and out and make sure you see it move on the remote control

--------

when you pull on the inside door handle can you tell if the top latch is releasing ,,??? pull on the handle and then pull on the top of the door to see if its loose ,,,,,,,this will confirm that the bottom latch is not unlatching ,,,,,

if the problem is that the cable fell off the bottom latch or that the bottom door latch is bad ,,,,, then lets try to unlatch it manually ,,,

this is how the cable is mounted to the lower latch -see pic below

graphic

To tell you the truth ,, I have been working at Ford dealer for over 21 years and never seen this cable or latch go bad on this unit ,,,,,, so what you have to do next is kind of on your own ,,,,, you have to use a flash light and a 90 deg pick and reach down at the bottom of the door at the lower door latch and see if you can hook on to ware that ball of the cable goes onto the latch and pull up on it to unlatch the lower latch ---- then once you get the door open you can replace the latch or the cable ,witch ever is broken

Fronts:
1. Remove 2 small screws at bottom of the door panel (6mm)
2. Remove small black cover from inset for door handle (pry it out carefully with a small flat head screw driver or panel removal tool) and remove bolt behind it (8mm)
3. Pop window/door lock control panel out with the same flat head screw driver and disconnect all connectors. Remove small screw from behind it (6mm)
4. Lift straight up on door panel and then tilt toward you.
5. Disconnect mirror control connector.
6. Squeeze two tabs on the door latch assembly and it can be removed along with the cable. DONE.

Rears: (SuperCrew)
1. Remove 2 screws at bottom of door panel. (6mm)
2. Pop the cover off the top of the door (behind the door window). And remove screw behind it. (6mm)
3. Remove small black cover from inset for door handle (pry it out carefully with a small flat head screw driver or panel removal tool) and remove bolt behind it (8mm)
4. Pop window control panel out with the same flat head screw driver and disconnect all connectors.
5. Lift straight up on door panel and then tilt toward you.
6. Squeeze two tabs on the door latch assembly and it can be removed along with the cable. DONE.

There is a screw behind the little piece of plastic which is located behind your inside door handle. I used a flat head screwdriver, wedged it between the plastic cover and the door and pulled it out. I also made a small scratch on the first one so be careful.
