Window Air-Conditioner does not turn on?
Is the thermostat knob turned to the proper setting? Is the compressor motor running? The compressor is a football-sized case with no apparent moving parts. It is located inside the air conditioner at the center. Is it humming or making any kind of continuous noise or causing the lights to dim? If it is making a continuous noise, and your air conditioner is still not cooling at all, there may be a serious problem with one or more of these areas:These items are not user serviceable. You will need to contact a qualified appliance repair technician to repair these components.

The whistling and the noisy sounds that interior parts make are very alarming. Have your service provider deal with it. Maybe changing some parts is the best solution for that. Sometimes, shredding more money can bring good results, too! :)

I agree with Mr. Simek, replacing parts can be the best solution to that. With problems like this, it's best to call your AC contractor to do the job. Sometimes, DIYs can make matters worse, especially when one is not properly knowledgeable.

Avery and Darren make a lot of sense. Many of our initial reactions to an AC or anything else breaking down is to check it out. We should know when to try to fix it and when to ask for assistance. We wouldn't want to make it harder for the servicemen to fix it because it can greatly affect us as well financially and considering the timeline of the repair.
